Of the Sagas

Þorsteinn Drómundr

Thorstein Dromund is Grettir's half-brother and avenger — and the man who carries the saga's vengeance to the farthest corner of the known world. After Grettir, the strongest man in Iceland, is brought down on Drangey by the sorcery of Thorbjörn Öngull, it falls to Thorstein to repay the killing. But Öngull flees all the way to Constantinople and takes service in the Varangian Guard, thinking distance will save him — and Thorstein follows him there, across the whole breadth of the Norse world, and kills him in the Greek city. The feud that began on a small Icelandic island runs to the walls of Byzantium: the most striking proof in the corpus of how wide that world stretched, and how long its memory for a killing. Thorstein himself ends his days in romance and a monastery in the south, the avenger who chased his brother's death to the edge of the earth and laid it to rest there.
