Þórólfr Mostrarskegg (Most-Beard)

Þórólfr Mostrarskegg

Thorolf Mostur-Beard is the devout settler at the founding of Eyrbyggja saga — a Norwegian chief so dedicated to the god Thor that he took his very name from the god and would do nothing without consulting him. Fleeing Harald Fairhair, he asked Thor where he should settle, then cast the high-seat pillars of his temple into the sea off Iceland and made his home where they drifted ashore, on the headland of Þórsnes, which he hallowed to the god. There he raised a great temple and established a holy assembly-ground so sacred that no man might foul it, and the nearby mountain Helgafell so holy that none might look on it unwashed, believing his line passed into it at death. Thorolf is the saga world's image of the deeply pagan founder — the settler who built his whole new world around the worship of Thor, and whose sacred ground and holy fell shape the saga for generations after him.
