Þorgrímr inn prúði (Thorgrim the Proud)

Þorgrímr inn prúði

Thorgrim is Viglund's father — a Norwegian of high birth (son of an earl's line) who, like so many saga patriarchs, leaves Norway and settles in Iceland, founding the family at the center of the romance of Viglund the Fair. He is the established, honourable settler whose son Viglund grows up to love Ketilrid, and whose standing and fortunes form the background against which the lovers' troubles play out. Thorgrim belongs to the large cast of founding fathers the sagas open with — the well-born Norwegian who crosses to Iceland, takes land, and raises the children whose loves and feuds will be the real story. He is the solid root from which the romance grows: the high-born settler-father whose son's faithful love for Ketilrid carries the gentlest of the sagas through its trials to its rare happy end.
