Snorri goði

Snorri Þorgrímsson

Snorri the Priest of Helgafell is the saga world's master strategist — the cool, calculating chieftain who appears across three sagas (Eyrbyggja, Laxdæla, Njáls) as the man everyone consults and no one quite out-thinks. Where the heroes act on impulse and honour, Snorri plays the long game: patient, ironic, slow to commit and deadly when he does, building his power case by careful legal case rather than by the sword. He is Guðrún's ally and confidant, the brain behind half the settlements and ambushes of the western sagas, equally at home steering a lawsuit at the Thing or a killing in the dark. He is not a warm figure — there is something chilly in his unflappable competence — but he is the one who survives and prospers while flashier men fall, the embodiment of the saga truth that in Iceland cunning and law outlast courage. The chess-player in a world of duels.
