Of the Sagas

Helgi Njálsson

Helgi Njálsson is one of Njáll's sons — and his death in the Burning is among the saga's most poignant moments. A capable, brave man like his brothers, he is trapped with the family when the burners surround and fire Bergþórshváll. As the house burns, Helgi tries to slip out disguised in a woman's cloak among those given safe-conduct — but he is spotted, and Flosi himself cuts him down at the door. His attempt to escape and his killing at the threshold capture the horror of the Burning in a single image: the brave man reduced to a desperate disguise, struck down in the doorway of his burning home. Helgi is the saga's image of the doomed son — one of the Njálssons whose own deeds helped bring the fire, dying in it not in open battle but in a last failed bid for life at the burning door.
