Of the Sagas
Hallr (Bardi's brother)
Hallr Guðmundarson
Hall is the slain brother whose killing sets the whole vengeance of Heiðarvíga saga in motion. A young man of the North, he is killed by the Southern men in the quarrel that the saga turns on — and his death is the wrong that his hard old kinsman Thorarin will spend years grooming and goading the reluctant Bardi to avenge. Hall himself is barely a character; he is the catalyst, the brother whose blood must be answered, around whose killing the saga's long, patient machinery of reprisal is built. His death stands for the saga truth that a single killing is never just a single killing: it is a debt that descends on the kin, a wrong that an old man will nurse and a young man will be driven to repay across years and a famous running battle on the heath. Hall is the first blood of the feud — the slain brother whose death obligates everyone who loved him.
