Of the Sagas

Freyr

Freyr is the great god of fertility, peace, and plenty — Freyja's brother, one of the Vanir, and the god the farming North loved best. He governs the sunshine and the rain and the fruitfulness of the earth; his are the good seasons, and in the Ynglinga Saga it is he who founds the sacred kingdom at Uppsala, from whose line the Norwegian kings descend. He owns the ship Skíðblaðnir that folds into a pouch and the boar with golden bristles. His great myth is one of longing: catching sight of the giant-maiden Gerðr from Odin's high seat, he is struck with a love so consuming that he gives away his magic sword to win her — the sword he will lack, and die for lacking, at Ragnarök. The saga-Icelanders swore by him (Hrafnkell was his priest, Glúm under his favour); the god of the green world, undone, like so many, by desire.
