Einarr

Einarr Eyjólfsson

Einar is Glúm's rival in Víga-Glúms saga — the man who at last brings the lawsuit that strips the ruthless chieftain of his great seat at Þverá. For years Glúm has dominated Eyjafjörðr by force, cunning, and the favour of the god Frey, untouchable while he holds his luck-tokens and his sacred ground. But after Glúm commits a killing on land holy to Frey and the god's favour turns from him, it is Einar who presses the legal case that finally dispossesses him of Þverá — the very seat that was the source of his power. Einar is the saga's image of the rival who topples the great man at law — the patient adversary who waits until the chieftain's luck has run out and then uses the law, not the sword, to take from him the holy farm whose loss is the loss of everything. The man who ends Killer-Glúm not in battle but in a lawsuit, when the god has already abandoned him.
