Farm of the Sagas

Þórhallsstaðir

Thorhallsstadir is the haunted farm where Grettir fights and kills the draugr Glám — the setting of the most terrifying scene in the sagas. The surly shepherd Glám died here on a Christmas eve, killed by some malignant thing, and thereafter walked again as a corpse-monster of monstrous strength, riding the roofs, killing beasts and men, and driving the farm to ruin — until Grettir came to fight him, and the two wrestled through the hall in the corpus's greatest scene of supernatural horror. Thorhallsstadir is the saga's image of the haunted house — the farm whose dead shepherd will not stay buried, where the strongest man in Iceland overcomes a walking corpse and earns, in the dying monster's curse, the dread of the dark that will doom him.
