District of the Sagas
Miðfjörðr
Miðfjörðr is the northern district that is home ground to Kormák the love-poet and his unattainable Steingerð, and to the witch Þorveig whose curse keeps them forever apart. A country of the North Quarter, it is the setting where Kormák first sees Steingerð, falls into the lifelong love he pours into verse, and where the sorcery is worked that dooms the match — so that though he loves her all his life and duels for her, he can never come to the wedding. Miðfjörðr stands for the saga world's strand of doomed love and uncanny meddling: a northern district where a poet's passion runs up against a witch's curse, and where the finest love-verse in the corpus is born out of a longing that magic and the poet's own nature will never let him satisfy. The home country of the love that could not be.
