Settlement of the Sagas
Lejre (Leire)
Lejre is the ancient royal seat of the Danish kings in Zealand — the legendary hall of Hrólf Kraki, and the Camelot of the Northern heroic legends. Here Hrólf, the greatest of the Skjöldung kings, gathered his ring of champions — Bödvar Bjarki the bear-warrior foremost — in a court remembered as the very image of ideal kingship: generous, brilliant, bound by loyalty unto death. And here, betrayed by his sorcerous sister Skuld, Hrólf and his champions died fighting in the burning hall, magnificent to the last. Lejre is the legend's image of the great hall and its doom — the seat of the North's most splendid legendary court, where heroic kingship reached its height and met its fiery, treacherous end, the place men remembered for how its warriors chose to die.
