Farm of the Sagas
Langarhús
Langarhús is Bjarni's stead in Hrafnkelsdalr — the modest farm whose sons, Sám and Eyvind, rise to play their fateful parts against the mighty Hrafnkell. From this small holding in the chieftain's own valley come the men who will, for a time, topple him: Sám, who prosecutes and outlaws him at the Thing, and Eyvind, who returns wealthy from Constantinople only to be killed in Hrafnkell's revenge. Langarhús is the saga's image of the ordinary household that reaches above its station — the unremarkable farm in the great man's valley from which spring the challengers who dare to take on a chieftain, the modest domestic origin of the men who briefly bring the proud priest of Frey to his fall.
