Kintyre (Satiri)
Kintyre — Saltiri — is the long Scottish peninsula Magnus Barefoot claimed as an 'island' by the most famous trick in his saga. Under his treaty with the Scots king, Magnus was to have every island west of Scotland that a ship could sail around with the rudder shipped — so, determined to add the rich peninsula of Kintyre, he had a vessel hauled across its narrow neck with the sail set and himself sitting at the helm, holding the tiller, so that he 'sailed' over the land. By the letter of the treaty, Kintyre was now an island, and his. Kintyre is the saga's image of audacity made law — the peninsula won by a king riding a dragged ship over dry land, the most memorable and absurd of Magnus's exploits, conquest by the literal-minded fulfilment of a clever clause.
