Region of the Sagas

Jutland

Jutland is the Danish mainland peninsula — Amleth's homeland in Saxo's history, and the seat of his father's governorship. Here Horwendil rules and is murdered by his envious brother Feng; here the boy Amleth feigns madness through every danger and at last burns the usurper's court and takes his revenge. Jutland is also where Magnus the Good won his great victory over the Wends at Hlyrskog. It is the corpus's image of the old Danish heartland — the broad peninsula that is the stage of the first Hamlet and of kings' battles, the ground of the oldest Danish legends, where a murdered father's son bides his time and where, generations later, a Norwegian king beats back the heathen with a dead saint at his side.
