District of the Sagas

Húnavatn

Húnavatn is the North-Quarter district about Húnawater where Bardi gathers his men for the great vengeance of Heiðarvíga saga. From this northern country the reluctant avenger, schooled and goaded by his old fosterer Thorarin, assembles the band that will ride south to repay the killing of his brother — the careful mustering that precedes the famous running battle on the heath. Húnavatn is the saga's image of the mustering-ground — the northern district where a long-planned reprisal is finally gathered into action, the home country from which Bardi sets out, at exactly the moment his old fosterer judges right, to carry the blood-debt across the moors. The staging-ground of one of the most patiently-plotted vengeances in the corpus.
