Farm of the Sagas
Hrafnkelsstaðir
Hrafnkelsstaðir is the homestead of Hrafnkell's second rise — the new farm he builds by the river Lagarfljót after his fall, and the proof of the saga's hard lesson about pride and power. Stripped of his chieftaincy, his sacred horse, and his great seat at Aðalból, tortured and humiliated, Hrafnkell does not rage or despair; he moves to this fresh ground, builds from nothing, works hard, and quietly grows powerful all over again — more dangerous, the saga suggests, for having learned from his ruin. From Hrafnkelsstaðir he bides his time and at last takes his patient, total revenge, recovering everything he lost. The farm is the saga's image of renewal through humility — the second seat of a proud man who fell, learned, and rose again, the homestead from which the chastened chieftain rebuilds a power even greater, and harder, than the one he lost.
