Fjord of the Sagas

Hergilsey

Hergilsey is one of the islands among the Breiðafjörð skerries where the outlaw Gísli hides during his long years on the run. Among its low isles and tides he finds refuge, sheltered by loyal helpers and his own cunning, slipping from island to island ahead of his hunters. Hergilsey belongs to the saga's landscape of outlawry — the maze of islands and fjords through which a hunted man can vanish, where local loyalty and knowledge of the tides buy a few more seasons of life. It is the saga's image of the island-refuge — one of the scattered hiding-places among which Gísli eludes pursuit, part of the wild, water-broken country of the Westfjords that shelters the corpus's most sympathetic outlaw through his thirteen hunted years.
