Farm of the Sagas
Foss
Foss is Holmkel's stead on Snæfellsnes, by Holmkel's River — the home where Ketilrid grows up beside Viglund the Fair, and one of the seats of the corpus's one true romance. Here the worthy chief Holmkel raises his daughter Ketilrid, fostered side by side with Viglund so that the two are bound from childhood and clearly made for each other; and from here the scheming of jealous kin works to part them, marrying Ketilrid off against her heart and driving Viglund abroad through the romance's many reverses. Foss is the saga's image of the home of faithful love — the Snæfellsnes stead where two children grow up destined for each other, the hearth of Ketilrid's long constancy, the place from which the lovers are torn and to which, in the rare happy end of the gentlest saga, their faith at last brings them home.
