Farm of the Sagas

Borg

Borg is the family seat of the greatest of the saga clans — the land-take of Skallagrím by Borgarfjörð in western Iceland, and the home of his son, the warrior-poet Egil Skallagrímsson. The wolf-clan came here in flight from Harald Fairhair, who had destroyed Egil's grandfather Kveldúlf and driven the family from Norway; and on this ground they built the seat from which Egil's turbulent, brilliant life unfolds. It is at Borg, in old age, that Egil — having lost his sons to the sea and to fever — shuts himself away to die of grief, until his daughter coaxes from him the Sonatorrek, the great lament. Borg is the saga world's image of the founded family seat: won in exile, held by force of character, and made immortal by the poetry composed within its hall.
