Farm of the Sagas

Bjarg

Bjarg is Grettir's family home in Miðfjörðr, in the north of Iceland — the prosperous farm of his father Asmund the Greyhaired, and the hearth from which Iceland's mightiest outlaw set out. It is here that the wild, difficult boy clashes endlessly with his disappointed father over chores and pranks, the friction of the household where a great and ungovernable nature first shows itself. And it is to Bjarg that the blood comes home: Grettir's gentle brother Atli is killed at its door by the enemies the troublesome outlaw has made. Bjarg is the saga's image of the home a hero is too large for — the solid northern farm where Grettir is raised, resented, and remembered, the family seat that pays in blood for the wildness of its most famous son.
